RoboSteel recently completed a superbike to match a super car we built last year for TopGear.  This motorcycle was completed from a concept based on the amazing artist ToonRama.  RoboSteel continues to break new ground in the design and constructing of steel sculptures made entirely from recycled steel.

The Carole Nash International Motorcycle and Scooter Show and The Red Adventure recently provided RoboSteel with a fantastic opportunity to create an Eco-minded life size MotorCycle Man sculpture.  They provided the concept and asked RoboSteeel to build a man based on their imagery of a man created from recycled motorcycle parts.

The motorcycle man is a perfect example of recycling in a digital age.  The original concept art was provided by the talented illustrator and graphic design artist Simon Roberts from The Red Adventure who used Adobe to create the original digital image.    Simon began by making pencil sketches, using photos of figures and anatomical drawings for reference.  Once the posture had been finalised, he began to piece the Motorcycle Man together, painstakingly resizing, distorting, positioning, and repositioning photos of bike parts, before carefully blending them to create the final mechanical man masterpiece.  When RoboSteel finally meet up with Simon it quickly became apparent that he had created the original graphic in his own image and the metal sculpture looked very much like him.

Building the Man:

The RoboSteel MotorCycleMan AKA RoboMan is made entirely from recycled motorcycle parts and took over 750 hours to construct.  Standing at 2 metres tall this one off sculpture has well over a thousand motorcycle parts creatively hidden.  If you look closely you will be able to see parts from many motorcycle manufacturers, including Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda and many others.

Tony Todd (AKA the fallen from the movie Transformers 2) is a big fan of RoboSteel and dropped by to see the sculpture in person.

The inspiration behind RoboSteel

Picasso’s sculpture of the bicycle saddle and a handlebar was the first example of a work made from everyday things, using junk or scrap. Like other of Picasso’s firsts this work opened up new possibilities for artists. In this instance – sculptors, who for centuries had employed traditional materials such as stone or wood now instead, many of them began to incorporate junk materials into their work (known as assemblages) or fashion new objects from them. The works are a great example of the inventive genius of Picasso and the ultimate inspiration for RoboSteel.

It was Thomas Edison who first said “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.   RoboSteel’S mission is to create both simple and complex steel sculptures from recycled materials. At RoboSteel anything you can imagine is real.

Recently, RoboSteel completed a project for a client in Heidelberg Germany.  Our customer had a very short but interesting project brief for the RoboSteel team. “Decorate my ultramodern home”

Located on the side of a very steep hill this amazing ultramodern house spans multiple levels and is constructed with state of the art building materials.  The house provided RoboSteel with an amazing opportunity to place some of our recycled steel sculptures in a perfect setting.

The 2.1 meter Predator took up his majestic position at the top of one of the two staircases that lead to the living room.

The 2 meter Alien Queen was carefully placed at the top of a spiral staircase.

The 2.2 meter Alien king took pride of place in the corner just beside the television.

And if you have doubt about the size of this house all three sculptures are basically in the same L shaped same room.

In honor of our love for transformers RoboSteel have just finished a life sized Bumblebee sculpture.  Standing at over 2.2 meters this robot is a very welcome addition to our family.   Made entirely from recycled steel this old Camaro is sub zero.

Its was at the MPH Top gear show that we fell in love with the yellow Camero and began to plan the construction.  It was Optimus who said that the  “Cameo at the show reminded him of his old friend Bumblebee” and we just had to make it for him. After all these guys are old friends and have fought many intergalactic battles together.

And so Bumblebee was born…………………………

This brings me on to the next question who is next?  I suppose Megatron would be a good idea. After all I need something to keep Optimus and Bumblebee out of  mischief.   What do you think?

A unique, specially commissioned sculpture of a spectacular ‘alien-like’ supercar of the future will be on display at this year’s MPH Show and will be auctioned to raise money for charity (TBC).

Based in Ireland RoboSteel is an innovative company that creates sculptures from recycled steel. This year RoboSteel will be unveiling a concept supercar at Earls Court, London, between 4 and 7 November 2010 and at the NEC, Birmingham between 11 and 14 November 2010.

Included in this statue will be parts from 100’s of different cars and it is RoboSteel’s intention to create a one of a kind concept supercar by recycling some of the best bits from other cars.

To create the sculpture the components will be welded together, the sharp edges will be smoothed and polished and then the whole creation will be coated with several layers of lacquer to protect it from the elements.

The finished artwork, which is primarily made of recycled steel taken from cars, motorbikes and airplanes, weighs 500kg, stands at over 1 meter tall and is made up of 1000’s of individual parts.

The piece will take approximately 750 hours to complete and will be shipped to the UK from Ireland in 4 separate pieces, before being reassembled in Earls Court in time for the first show on Thursday 4th November.

Piyanuch Chanphet of Robosteel comments: “This is the first time we’ve used our design concept to create a supercar. The initial design for the car was created by the amazing India based art designer Toonrama. The RoboSteel concept supercar is based on the complex designs and structures of south Indian temples and the Kirtimukha sculptures that are positioned at the entrance to these temples. Dave Murphy from Dublin Ink has added an Alien theme to a second design drawing. RoboSteel will use both drawings to craft the Alien Supercar and we are really looking forward to this project”.

“All of our previous projects have been focused on building alien and futuristic creatures but we’ve been involved with the MPH Show for a couple of years now and it feels like the right time to develop our style, and design a concept car. This sculpture when completed will be one of a kind and destined to become a museum piece in the future”

Sending a 2.4 meter 650kg Alien in the post takes a lot preparation.  Especially when the final destination is on another continent.  This is how we recently shipped a large Alien to Trinidad from Dublin in Ireland.

Firstly the Alien is put to sleep by a massive dose of medication.  This gives us time to take him apart and also makes the journey easy on the creature.

The Alien pieces are then carefully packed inside the crate…………..

The reinforced crate is then fixed all around the beast

Finally the shipment is ready and everything is sealed inside the large wooden crate.  All that is left is the address and a call to the brave postman to come and collect the shipment for delivery.

The motorcycle man is now starting to come together, the basic shape of the head was completed this morning.  This sculpture has been commissioned by the Carole Nash International Motorcycle and Scooter Show and will be on show at the NEC Birmingham 27th November until 6th December 2010

A unique, specially commissioned sculpture of a spectacular ‘alien-like’ supercar of the future will be on display at this year’s MPH Show and will be auctioned to raise money for charity (TBC). Based in Ireland RoboSteel is an innovative company that creates sculptures from recycled steel.

RoboSteel have now finished the super car sculpture and as of 09:37 GMT 28/10/2010 it has been loaded onto a cargo plane to be flown to London for the first MPH Top Gear show at Earls Court.
